Day 5

Well this day was my last and final appearance in Granger High for hopefully sometime. It had sure been an experience but a good one! I was able in addition to teach one final foods class lab observe another adult roles class. The topic for the day was a good one Marriage & Money! I was excited to hear what the class had to say about this lesson. Plus I was hoping it was going to be stimulating instead of a fighting sleep lesson. Oh and it was oh what a day! Crazy and off topic but it was funny that they had the same bulletin board when I was a student in the high school. It made me laugh and I later mentioned it to my teacher who taught the class. Her answer was, "welcome to Granger". I agree! But onto the actual class. The class was assigned to create a budget. Being high school students they of course completely forgot about thinkg like electicity, gas, insurance. It was quite the lesson. All in all the classes feedback and ideas were quite unique. I was laughing and the teacher was asking my advice on things it was a good time. The students then asked me what my expences are being in college. They about died when they found out how much rent was and the bills. It was a wake up call for many of them. They didn;t ealize how much it cost to live on your own. After than class it was a prep period and then I observed another interior design class. They just worked on their dream houses and I corrected a few papers. But it was a good, relaxed day.

Teaching Techniques:
Oh, my favorite by far! When the students entered their adult roles class there was an overhead projector with an assignemnt on it. As soon as the class entered the teacher had the students get out a piece of paper and copy the assignment down. It was a 10 paged term paper on budgeting. When I saw the requirements and that it was due the next wednesday and it was frieday I was shocked. The students immediatly began huffing and puffing and making a mess of the class. Refusing to do the assignment oh it wasn't fair, that kind of thing. About 10 minuets into the class thr teacher stood up and asked "is anyone stressed?" they all said yes and she laughed.. The term paper was a joke and the days lesson was on stress.. It was great!! I then told the class that even for a college student 1 week and a ten paged paper was pushing it. It was a great way to get the kids involved wiht the lesson and get them "stressed". It was an excellent teaching technique. She didn't tell them about a bill they needed to pay, a family emergency of somekind. It was down to their level.. Homework over the weekend.. It was great!

Classroom Management:
When it came to classroom management I again look to an adult roles class. This one was taught by a different teacher than before. There is a huge style difference between the two. Well, this particular class decided that they were not going to do the assignment. Infact the two boys in the back were chatting about leaving out the back door and going to the second lunch. Somehw the teacher caught wind of their plan and she put me incharge of the door. I was pretty shocked. While she continued to teach she had me be a watch dog for the door. I think there were other ways she could have managed the class. Instead of announcing, "Miss Anderson will be by the door so none of you can leave!" If they want to leave i'm sure not going to stop someone who is bigger than me. Forget that!! She sid the class was not cooporating so they all have to do bookwork now. Having the students get up, get the books creating more problems. Sure enough those boys bolted out the door as she yelled, "thats going to be a sluff!" It was just not the best way to handle the situation. Then I felt bad, but I was not standing between the boys and the door forget that. I value my life and my car! She coudl have managed the classroom beter. Put the boys in the front of the class. COntinued with her lesson. If it still persisted contact the administration. Using book work as an excuse and causing more problems. Not cool!

Discipline:
I was in the interior design class late in the afternoon and the class way free to get p and work on their projects. Well these girls in the corner decided it was going to be diva party central. They were chatting about how they were going to a guys house after school so they whipped out the make-up, hair spray, and yes, even a curling iron. The teacher did NOTHING!!!!! I just couldn't believe it. I love this teacher dearly but you have got to be kidding. I asked the ladies what they were doing. They chose not to answer. I was ticked. But what could I do? It was a joke! I was so annoyed... After I talked to the teacher and she said she really didn't mind. It was their grade. Yes, I agree but I woudl care!! Ahhh!! That was so annoying!! It shows how little control the teacher has over her class. She asked a girl to get off the cell phone and the girl just turned away. The teacher did nothing. AHHHHH! Guess thats life.

Vonna, I agree with you. I think this are battles I would have picked to fight. Saying that what to do? It has to be in force from day one whatever it is and it has to be consistent. It sounds if most of what was wrong comes from the instruction that was going on. The students weren't engaged and interested. I think that is the start. Good points. Full credit.
