Well this day was my last and final appearance in Granger High for hopefully sometime. It had sure been an experience but a good one! I was able in addition to teach one final foods class lab observe another adult roles class. The topic for the day was a good one Marriage & Money! I was excited to hear what the class had to say about this lesson. Plus I was hoping it was going to be stimulating instead of a fighting sleep lesson. Oh and it was oh what a day! Crazy and off topic but it was funny that they had the same bulletin board when I was a student in the high school. It made me laugh and I later mentioned it to my teacher who taught the class. Her answer was, "welcome to Granger". I agree! But onto the actual class. The class was assigned to create a budget. Being high school students they of course completely forgot about thinkg like electicity, gas, insurance. It was quite the lesson. All in all the classes feedback and ideas were quite unique. I was laughing and the teacher was asking my advice on things it was a good time. The students then asked me what my expences are being in college. They about died when they found out how much rent was and the bills. It was a wake up call for many of them. They didn;t ealize how much it cost to live on your own. After than class it was a prep period and then I observed another interior design class. They just worked on their dream houses and I corrected a few papers. But it was a good, relaxed day.
Teaching Techniques:
Oh, my favorite by far! When the students entered their adult roles class there was an overhead projector with an assignemnt on it. As soon as the class entered the teacher had the students get out a piece of paper and copy the assignment down. It was a 10 paged term paper on budgeting. When I saw the requirements and that it was due the next wednesday and it was frieday I was shocked. The students immediatly began huffing and puffing and making a mess of the class. Refusing to do the assignment oh it wasn't fair, that kind of thing. About 10 minuets into the class thr teacher stood up and asked "is anyone stressed?" they all said yes and she laughed.. The term paper was a joke and the days lesson was on stress.. It was great!! I then told the class that even for a college student 1 week and a ten paged paper was pushing it. It was a great way to get the kids involved wiht the lesson and get them "stressed". It was an excellent teaching technique. She didn't tell them about a bill they needed to pay, a family emergency of somekind. It was down to their level.. Homework over the weekend.. It was great!
Classroom Management:
When it came to classroom management I again look to an adult roles class. This one was taught by a different teacher than before. There is a huge style difference between the two. Well, this particular class decided that they were not going to do the assignment. Infact the two boys in the back were chatting about leaving out the back door and going to the second lunch. Somehw the teacher caught wind of their plan and she put me incharge of the door. I was pretty shocked. While she continued to teach she had me be a watch dog for the door. I think there were other ways she could have managed the class. Instead of announcing, "Miss Anderson will be by the door so none of you can leave!" If they want to leave i'm sure not going to stop someone who is bigger than me. Forget that!! She sid the class was not cooporating so they all have to do bookwork now. Having the students get up, get the books creating more problems. Sure enough those boys bolted out the door as she yelled, "thats going to be a sluff!" It was just not the best way to handle the situation. Then I felt bad, but I was not standing between the boys and the door forget that. I value my life and my car! She coudl have managed the classroom beter. Put the boys in the front of the class. COntinued with her lesson. If it still persisted contact the administration. Using book work as an excuse and causing more problems. Not cool!
Discipline:
I was in the interior design class late in the afternoon and the class way free to get p and work on their projects. Well these girls in the corner decided it was going to be diva party central. They were chatting about how they were going to a guys house after school so they whipped out the make-up, hair spray, and yes, even a curling iron. The teacher did NOTHING!!!!! I just couldn't believe it. I love this teacher dearly but you have got to be kidding. I asked the ladies what they were doing. They chose not to answer. I was ticked. But what could I do? It was a joke! I was so annoyed... After I talked to the teacher and she said she really didn't mind. It was their grade. Yes, I agree but I woudl care!! Ahhh!! That was so annoying!! It shows how little control the teacher has over her class. She asked a girl to get off the cell phone and the girl just turned away. The teacher did nothing. AHHHHH! Guess thats life.

Day 4
I had made up my mind that today was going to be the best day ever and that I was going to rock the classroom. Infact that is how it ended up. I was assigned to teach today. I was able to teach two foods I classes and demo chocolate chip muffins in the quick bread section. I was excited to actually demo to a real class. The first class demo went well, not super great but okay. I had forgotten to tell the class that we were working in the quick bread section and I also used the dry measuring cup for measuring the oil and milk. But, no fear the second time I fixed all my mistakes and had a wonderful presentation. The class was very vocal and wanted to participate. I had made giant chocolate chips with facts about chocolate printed on them. The class absolutly loved to actually participate in the demo by reading the facts as I was doing the demo. Once the class had all gathereed their materials and my demo things were put away I was able to walk around and talk to the students. I asked them if they liked the muffins, what they would change, those sorts of questions. All in all it was a great day. I also had a prep period and then just observed a financial literacy classroom. After the demo experience I think I can handle the real life. If it gets any more uncomfortable than a student asking me if I get horny and eat chocolate I think i'm good!! Crazy people!!! What an interesting but good experience!
Teaching techniques:
When I observed the financial literacy class, the only other class I observed that day they were doing book work. Personally, i'm not a fan of book work. from what I saw the students were just playing on their phones and listening to music not even working on the assignment. The teacher however was working on her computer and getting things done. I understand that there is down time that the students must do some book work but it seemed pointless. If they were like me, if it was meaningless and I knew the teacher wouldn't read it I would just skim the text. The class was not working, the teacher was in and out of the classroom and no one was on task. I hope that when my class does have to work on book work somehow I will have a better technique f teaching it. Maybe she could have had the class take turns reading and fill out the assignment that way. Instead of everyone just messing around.
Classroom Management:
I was really impressed how the foods lab was set up and the class knew the ropes. It was neat how being the teacher than day the students knew how to act, yes some were a bit crazy. But all in all the classroom was set up to where if I were a substitute and had never been in there before they students could still work on the lab. There were not students complaining that they didn't know where things were. They all knew what they had to get done, a slight stare from the teacher and they were right back ontask. I think that is really impressive, they were not goign to step all over her and she had in all under control.
Discipline:
On the other hand, I was not so impressed with the discipline in being late to class. In the foods lab there is a sheet of paper that the students would sign if they were late. Well, watching and observing the class students were still trickling in after I hadfinished my demo. Most of the students would not even sign the sheet. I really didn't think it was an effective way to take roll. Only the students that had a conscience actually signed and they were the ones who got introuble? It was just weird and I was not to impressed with that form of discipline.

Day 3
Today was the first day where I got to have a class with the same students. It was nice to not have to explain who I was and what I was doing there. I presented my motivator to two Child Development classes. I had taken their previous reading assignment and made questions and we had a game of jeopardy. It worked out great! This day seemed to be one of my favorites because I was able to be hands on with the students more and still act with some sort of respect and not just a pal. Later on in the day the power went out and boy was that a show and a half. Thankfully the FACS office had flashlights and we used those for awhile. It all worked out.
Teaching Techniques:
It was interesting to see how once I was finished with my motivator the teacher just rolled with it and picked up as if she had presented the motivator. It was a good and a real confidence building transition. I felt as if I had actually done something right. I also observed the preschool again and the way the students were the teachers. The classroom teacher over the students had a very positive way of telling the students what they needed to do. They had specific instructions of the things required of them as teachers in the preschool. It was just to watch the teacher let the students take the reins.
Discipline:
When the power went out that was quite the event. The students all yelled and screamed and were wanting to go outside and get out of the dark classroom. The particular teacher I was observing at that time was very calm and told the students what they needed to do. One student just got up and barged out of the door in the back of the classroom. The teacher asked the rest of the class who else wanted to leave. Some raised their hand and other just sat there. She then told them if they choose to leave it would be marked as a sluff. It was an easy way to get to the point and not create more of a mess.
Classroom Management:
It was interesting to see what happened to the classroom management when the power went out. Another teacher, with a smaller classroom, they moved to the preschool where there were large windows with plenty of light. It was as if the lesson never missed a beat. she picked up class right from there and continued on. Unlike one of the other teachers who just let the class go to the lunch that was in session. It was interesting to see the differences.

Day 2
The second day was another fresh start, new classes and new students. I was abel to complete my bulletin board that day so that was a relief. I was once agin able to observe the classes and the students. I was able to ask them questions and see what they liked and disliked about the classes ansd the curriculum. My favorite part of the day was observing the child care class. Oh man.. The kids were a hoot. I was able to help with the snack part. This one little girl came up to me and asked me if I was a missionary, because of my tag I would assume. It was quite funny.. The entire class of girls laughed and it was a story to tell for sure.
Teaching style:
It ws interesting to see the class of students taguht the preschool and how they all worked together. How the teacher was able to sit back and let them rule to roost. Im sure in the students minds it was a confidence builder to know that the teacher trusted them enough to not hover over them as they taught. I was also impressed how the teacher who was incharge of the adult roles class actually was able to incorporate hands on activities. It was the first that i had seen and the kids really really loved it. She presented balloons as different types of stresss. Then added more and more to see how the students could handle the stress. The balloons fell and they were able to see how if they had a method and a way to manage the balloons things would work out. It was an excellent idea!
Management:
Today was not a big day for the management stuff. I was able to see a wider variety of classroom activities. That ultimatly lead to less disruption and more cooperation, allowing a successful lesson to be taught.
Discipline:
It's amazing to me how rude people can be let alone a student to a teacher. There was a student who called a teacher a horrid name. The teacher just said "thats fine" and brushed it off. I wonder if the teacher didn't know whatthe name meant or if they were just not caring. It was sure interesting that nothing was done.

Day 1
For my first day at the High School I was quite nervous. My clinical teachers had said they would give me full range to do whatever I needed to do and boy were they right. I was able to take roll and ask the classes questions and help them with their assignments in child development. It was interesting to have such resistance when trying t communicate but it evened out by the end of the period. I then was able to observe the foods class, it was very interesting how she organized and presented the information to the class. I then moved on to the sewing class, therre were only four students in the class so I was able to talk one o one to see their experiences in the class and what they did and didn't like about the class and what they would personaly change. Then for the final hour I moved into the financial literacy class, what a diference in size conpared to the sewing class. There were not enough chairs for all of the students. This class is one of the requirements needed to graduate so the class was packed. I was not sure if it was because it was the end of the day or the class itself but they were very disrespectful. I coudn't believe it. The teacher was about 30 and they treated her horribly. It was an eye opener that you must establish your presence and the behavior you expect if you want it to be followed. But all in all my first day was good, an eye opener for sure but a positive one.
Classroom Management:
I was able to see the different styles of four different teachers. I was especially interested how the foods teacher managed the classroom. It was nice to see thatthe kids were pretty respectuful in the class and things were not to out of hand. She allowed the groups to come up to the front and collect their needed supplies for their lab instead of having things already in their labs. She also agve them the time limit, more than needed and if they were not finished they did not recieve points for the day. It was a good idea to get the students to work and not just mess around.
Teaching Style:
Like I ststed before I was able to observe four different teachign styles. It was interesting to see the different respect levels the students had for the various teachers. For example in the Child Care class the students were talkign and messing around, braiding each others hair and so on. The teacher had no control and it was obvious that she really didnt care to. But then in the sewing class the teacher had strict rues, if not obeyed then they were disciplined. It was different the range of how they followed through in the classroom and actually had some sort of rhyme for the reason.
Discipline:
There was an experience today when a boy kept takign the notebook from another student, a girl of course. I woudl assume it was some sort of flirting tactic but it was not working. Everyone was getting mad and nothing was being done about it. Finally the girl just got up and left the class. The teacher didn't punish the boy who was causig problems. And I have n clue what ever hapened to the girl who left class. I was just frustrated that the teacher did not do anythign. If i were the girl I think I would have left too. It took all that I had not to say something to them . Oh man!!!
